Power cuts are a regular occurrence in Cape Verde; due to the country’s insular location, electricity has so far mostly been generated by diesel generators or through the import of diesel or heavy fuel oil from West Africa – a process that is both environmentally harmful and very expensive. The ideal conditions for renewable energy systems – sunshine on almost 350 days a year and a very steady wind – now make it possible to implement different, more cost-effective and sustainable solutions.
With the successful implementation of this project, Ecoproject Cabo Verde, a subsidiary of the Projekt Group, has already implemented the fourth renewable energy project on Cape Verde. This means that the TUI group’s target of reducing emissions by 46.2 percent by 2030 has already been far exceeded at Robinson Club Cape Verde on the island of Sal. With the new system, the hotel is almost self-sufficient in terms of electricity during the day while also tolerating power cuts of up to four hours. The regulatory framework in Cape Verde was another technical challenge; the system must be operated in such a way that it does not feed electricity into the public grid.
"We are pleased that we have overcome all hurdles together with our local partners and our European specialist suppliers," says José Britto, the managing partner responsible. Logistics was one of the biggest challenges; the transportation of the components via Portugal to the islands was complex and time-consuming, as was customs clearance with the challenge of slow and support-intensive decision-making processes.
Projekt GmbH’s technical operations management performs remote monitoring and validates the operating parameters to ensure efficient operation and rapid fault resolution and achieve maximum electricity production.
"But in the end, it's success that counts," said Heike Kröger and Ubbo de Witt at the final acceptance in Cape Verde, together with the TUI Group managers.
