The energy transition is a heavyweight

100 MVA transformer station in Oldenbroker Feld receives its centerpiece

Delivery and installation of the 80-ton transformer

PWG GmbH & Co. Umspannwerk Oldenbrok KG, a member of the Projekt group of companies, was able to secured the land required for the implementation of the wind farm projects Niederort and Rhynschloot in good time after obtaining a grid connection commitment by AVACON. WT Energiesysteme GmbH, based in Riesa, was tasked with the construction. Both projects are in PWG’s own portfolio. The transformer station is scheduled to be commissioned by AVACON in April 2026.

"At 80 tons, the transformer is massive," said site manager Martin Jongebloed after the successful delivery. As part of the further project development in the municipality of Ovelgönne, Wesermarsch district, six Vestas turbines of type V162-7.2 and one Vestas turbine of type V150-5.6 will initially be built and connected. The road and bridge construction required to cross the Käseburger Sieltief has already begun.

With a capacity of 48.8 MW, the project is expected to provide enough electricity for nearly 28,000 households from Q2 2027. This figure is based on a single-family home with four people. For comparison: there are 1,822 households with single-family homes in the municipality of Ovelgönne, while there are 11,926 family households with children in the entire district of Wesermarsch (census, 2022).

"This project is another important step towards decarbonizing our energy supply. Lower Saxony is the number one wind power state in Germany, and we have been successfully implementing the energy transition for many years with our national and international projects," say Heike Kröger and Ubbo de Witt, managing partners.

Creating added value from wind and solar energy, including for local authorities and residents, is something we have been advocating for decades. With success – the Lower Saxony Participation Act of 2024, the so-called "Lower Saxony Wind Act",  has become the legal basis for additional municipal leeway.
